Take me to Tobago!

January 23, 2016

Over Winter break we went over to the sister isle of my homeland Trinidad to the island of Tobago.

Tobago is the more resort, touristy, laid back island unlike the busy, industrial Trinidad.

Tobago is an island paradise and less commercialized and busy than some other Caribbean destinations. Which is how I like it.

We stayed for 4 nights at Beverly’s Oasis. Not an all inclusive resort but it suited our needs perfectly. Laid back, clean, well kept and out of the bustle of the Crown Point Airport Area.

For flights we used the local airline Caribbean airline. Unfortunately we had a huge flight delay due to the Christmas rush to get there this time. Normally, however, it’s usually an easy 15 minute flight straight out of Piarco airport. If you’re planning to get the flight connection in Trinidad be sure to give yourself at least 4 hours extra time to be able to get the flight to Tobago on time.

After arriving in Tobago’s airport ground transportation is easy to find via taxis, who thankfully are working later than the rental car companies who close at night.

I would still recommend getting a rental car as it’s much cheaper than taxi fare and you are free to travel easily and less walking around in the hot tropical sun.

Driving on the other side of the road isn’t too bad. My trick for driving is remembering  to keep the middle of the road must be on my side instead of the passenger side of the car.

I’ve had all my driving in the US for 9 years and was easily able to drive in Tobago without chaos or accidents.

Hotels and guest houses are plentiful and have different ratings depending on how much you’re willing to pay. Check out reviews online and call ahead to confirm bookings. People seem to respond better to phone calls than email in Tobago.

Food is amazing in Tobago.

Our first dinner was at Crown Point Beach hotel. Definitely must try even if you’re not a guest at that hotel.

We ate at Fortune Chinese restaurant, Miss Jean’s by the beach, KFC and Royal Castle, Mediterranean gyros.

What an awesome vacation destination. Tobago is so beautiful with its bright blue skies and sandy beaches. It must have been so amazing growing up in Trinidad and having paradise right at your doorstep. Lucky you πŸ˜‰
