Rachio Smart Sprinkler Controller Upgrade

January 4, 2019

Happy New Year 2019! Our lawn ended up getting over watered and soppy due to the K-Rain sprinkler system that came with our new house.

The rain sensor attached to it wasn’t working and would water the lawn regardless if it rained or not according to the schedule. Plus it would water the lawn before a heavy shower of rain. Caused our new grass to become kind a brown…leave it to us to kill grass 🙁

For Christmas Skyla got JT a Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller

New House New Home + Safety month

June 5, 2018

Been a busy few months for Sunita Girl. After getting a new job, time to blog has been hard to find. Will post more about the job in another post.

We finally decided to buy a house. Our 2 bedroom apartment was pretty crowded with both of us and puppy so it was time to get a bigger place. Hopefully it will be a lot quieter too. Our neighbors are frequently noisy at night at our apartment.

Here’s some tips for moving to a new place.

  • Fill out a Change of Address form with USPS so you don’t miss any mail
  • Find out the emergency contact info for your utilities.
  • Order checks and mailing labels with your new address
  • Buy fire extinguisher. Also make sure your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are working
  • Have an emergency escape plan
  • Change air filters
  • Replace all light bulbs with LED See my previous post about selecting the correct color
  • Expoxy coat garage floor
  • Make a homeowner’s journal with instruction manuals, insurance papers, repair/upgrade receipts
  • Set up pest control and landscaping services
  • Label your circuit breaker box
  • Know where your main water valve is and how to turn it off in case of emergency.
  • Get carpets steam cleaned

Getting Crafty with Cricut

September 4, 2017

For my 2nd wedding anniversary my husband got me my own Cricut Explore Air 2 machine in Rose pink 🙂

Cricut Explore Air 2

Cricut Explore Air 2

What is it?

It’s a software controlled cutting machine used for crafting.

It can cut paper, cardstock, vinyl, and iron-on to specialty materials like glittery paper, polished foils, and bonded fabric.

Meaning I can make all the custom stickers and cards I want! 😀

It uses the online Cricut Design Space that allows me to design my own creations. There’s tons of premade shapes, fonts and project avaiable in Design Space. Getting the Design Space setup took a lil bit of troubleshooting skills to give it the correct permissions on my PC to be able to launch it but their online tech support was able to help out and I got it working

California Adventure Part 2: Train Ride & San Diego

July 16, 2017

We decided that a train ride must occur during out trip out west. We took the Amtrack’s Pacific Surfliner from the train station in LA down to San Diego roundtrip. It was exciting to go on my first train ride. We ended up getting to the train station late thanks to stupid LA traffic that morning and missed our train. It was confusing to find the overnight parking too which added more delay. We ended up parking in an underground parking lot in the Gateway Center Union Station.

However, unlike airplanes, we were able to get on the next train which left 1 hour later without paying any fees 🙂 Additionally the train tickets are cheaper than a flight down there.

We boarded our first train and had to leave our big luggage downstairs to go get seats upstairs. Thankfully Amtrak had Wi-Fi and power outlets available. Also a dining car that had sandwiches available. I was pleasantly surprised that my train sandwich tasted pretty good.

View from the Pacific Surfliner

The views along our route were amazing. We passed right along the coast and beaches. It took us 2 hours and 45 minutes to get to San Diego and the train was on time. It was a very smooth ride. I’d definitely recommend the Pacific Surfliner train route.Continue Reading

California Adventure Part 1 – San Francisco & Petaluma

July 16, 2017

We took a trip to California to visit JT’s family and see what all the fuss about California was about.

For flights we booked a from Orlando (MCO) to LA (LAX) with Virgin America. They had decent rates and comfortable seating. I liked the  touch screen monitor each seat had that allowed you to select your own movie or TV show to watch. They had good movies and The Big Bang Theory episodes for free so I was pretty content. They did not have free Wi-Fi though but did have power outlets to charge devices for free.

The screens also let you order food and drinks and even send items to other passengers. The terminal for Virgin America in Orlando was in a decent location in terminal A with a food court close by. The food court had lots of healthy food options. They have Jersey Mike’s which is what I ate, a salad place, and Italian food and a bar place.  Note if you’re going to be flying with Virgin there’s a difference between Virgin America and Virgin Atlantic and they aren’t the same check-in place in the airport.

The terminal in LAX was pretty crummy and cold. Of course we ended up delayed there for almost 2 hours waiting for our flight to San Francisco. The only food available nearby was gross Burger King. The LAX airport in general was quite old and dumpy looking in comparison to the Orlando airport. It’s so crappy we had to exit down the plane stairs onto the runway then up 2 flights of stairs with our carry-on luggage when we landed. They didn’t have the overhead walkway. Ugh.

Safety Time

May 31, 2017

Are you ready for a Hurricane?

#HurricanePrep Another year has gone by since my last safety post. That time went by so fast.

June is here again and it means the start of Hurricane season here in Florida.

Last years’ post has a good list of safety items you should have in case of emergency.

This month I’ll check all those supplies and make sure they are working.

Even though I live in an apartment that has their own maintenance, I still like to do my own safety checks just to be sure.

I’ll test the smoke detectors (wearing earplugs of course) and checking that the fire extinguisher is charged.

Also will check that my emergency hurricane supplies are working and functional and stockpile a few new cans of food.

Another good disaster preparedness step is to secure important documents in a safe place and make copies of them and save those in a secure cloud service just in case.

Make sure you have the correct insurance coverage also in case of a hurricane or flood.

This year in Florida, our Governor has declared a nine-day tax free period for hurricane supplies beginning May 31.

Useful Travel Apps

May 24, 2017

For my last trip I found the following Android apps useful*:

Cover artGoogle Calendar – If it’s not on my calendar it not important to me. I used it for adding reminders for the trip. Also I can schedule flights according to the correct timezone for both departure and landing.

Cover artEvernote – I keep my packing checklist here. It’s useful to share the list with my travelling companion to make sure we have the stuff we need.

Cover artGo City Card – Kept a QR code version of my multi-pass tickets here. It was easy to retrieve and scan at ticket counters.

Cover artGoogle Play Music – For playing music via Bluetooth in the rental car.

I Survived Coding Bootcamp

May 11, 2017

I’m still alive! Sorry for the late update. The last few months were really busy for me with classes, homework and projects.

Sunita Web developer badge

My Credly Badge

Cost
I paid for the class in full and got a reduced rate from $10,000 to  $8,500
UCF’s Coding Bootcamp Registration

Schedule
The boot camp format schedule was 3 times per week for approximately 6 months.
I had classes on Mon and Wed with a joint class on Saturdays with students from Tues and Thurs.

Each class was 3 hours long from 6.30pm till 9.30pm. Unfortunately for me I was driving for the same amount of time as I spent in class 3 hours each time I had to go to class in Orlando from Melbourne. During the week I would leave home by 3:00pm and return around 11:00pm. I would get to Orlando before serious rush hour traffic, have diner there then go to class. Luckily, I was not working so I could leave home early, it also allowed me to be able to review and study on my own on the days I didn’t have class. Which was necessary for me to keep up with the weekly homework assignments.
